Weeden Lodge – Wing 5
PBS has completed work on converting Wing 5 of the Cameron Offices into off campus student accommodation for under and post graduate students at the University of Canberra (UC). The Cameron Offices are iconic heritage buildings constructed primarily of concrete, and are located in the Belconnen Town Centre. They were initially used to house
Australian Commonwealth Government departments.
The adaptive reuse project will provide a modern student accommodation complex within an existing unique and significant heritage fabric. The project will provide a student accommodation facility in a nearby off campus setting to support the activities of the UC which has seen its student numbers grow by more than 35% since 2007.
Once the refurbishment is complete the 5 storey building will house up to 260 students, providing a range of accommodation options such as 1 and 2 bedroom studio apartments, 3, 4, & 5 bedroom apartments, and communal facilities including kitchenettes, laundries, break out study areas and recreational facilities in a safe and secure environment.
The major focus for the Cameron Offices project is heritage conservation, with the building being listed in 2005 as a Commonwealth heritage place. As part of the conservation plan the renovation will not compromise the buildings’ concrete structure, and any changes to the external colouring of the building will be kept consistent with the original colour pallet.
