THE CENTRAL BY GOODWIN CRACE
Goodwin Aged Care Services (GACS) is Canberra’s largest Aged Care provider, with 4 villages currently operating in the ACT. In response to Canberra’s aging population GACS is expanding its operations across Canberra, one of which was the design and development of The Central. This development site is 12,884m2 in size and is one of the most significant in Crace in terms of size and location. The project offers a range of one, two and three bedroom apartments and three bedroom townhouses, all of which are adaptable to meet the provisions of the Adaptable Housing Code. It includes 135 apartments over nine buildings of two, three and four levels. The project also includes:
- 538m2 of commercial space including cafe on the ground floor of Building A
- A central clubhouse
- 212 car parking spaces
The design concept seeks to create a seniors living environment that is vibrant, urban and secure, devoid of an institutional stigma with a view to attracting residents of a younger age than many other such retirement complexes in Canberra. The architectural character seeks to create a comfortable and attractive environment for residents in what is a higher density urban environment. The simple but articulate buildform includes a clear base masonry to the main buildings, the incorporate of rendered masonry and metal cladding in a consistent arrangement, expressed “flat” roofs on key building elements which wrap up from the ground plane and over each building as a consistent thematic element and expressed taller apartment units to all 4 storey buildings.
